Gitmo is along the way to Baracoa. The taxi driver stopped on a high hilltop so I could get my picture. This probably was better than making the trip to Guantanamo city and going to a lookout tower, which is as close as anybody gets. Besides, the city has little else to offer. In researching the trip I learned that, unlike the image of prisoners in orange suits it conjures up, the military base has served a number of humanitarian purposes since the U.S. was granted perpetual use of this Cuban land after the U.S. helped overthrow the Spanish in 1903. |
