Dating from the 7th to 12th centuries, My Son was the imperial city and hindu meditation center of the Chamlas. Now one of the country's 54 ethnic minorities, Chamlas used to rule a good part of what is now Vietnam. Their downfall was caused by offering a Vietnamese princess coveted because of lighter skin and slimmer build to be a wife of their leader. In essence, she was an embedded spy and wrecked havoc on their civilization.

About 10,000 years later American bombs left large craters next to whatever remains standing.
