Edfu is the second largest temple in Egypt and well preserved. It explains much about the Greco-Roman era. Major history chunks are the pharoahs, the Greeks and Romans, the ptolemaic era when this temple was constructed (237 to 57 BC), Christian/Coptic, the Mamelukes, the Turks, the French, the English and their own three strongmen – Nassar, Sadat and Mubarak. Five thousand+ years of history is an awful lot to keep straight. |
