Cuba trip
The most significant site in Santiago is the Moncada barracks where Fidel and Raul Castro made an ill-fated attack in 1953 that got them prison time and 60 of their men tortured and shot. Grisly pictures of the dead were in the museum dedicated to the revolution. Today it is a school, and children walk innocently across the former bloodbath area en route to lunch. After release, the Castros took to the mountains and continued recruiting, organizing and attacking until Batista fled in 1959.
