One beautiful vista after another...

Vis island is billed as one of the least developed, a concept that immediately appealed.

The reason that Vis has been less scathed by the tourist industry is because it was Tito's military base and, therefore, kept secretive. Tito's goal was to keep Yugoslavia unified, but after his death in 1980, things started falling apart.

Croatia became one of the countries that emerged from Yugoslavia's dissolution – along with Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovenia and Kosovo (latter not recognised by some countries).

The harrowing, first-gear drive to get to our apartment on the hill above Vis city remains a memorable experience.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik's old town as seen from the cable car that ascends to a fort overlooking the city.

Heavily bombed in 1991, it is rebuilt and a major tourist destination (often referred to as the Balkan Disneyland). We were well-advised to walk the old town walls in the late afternoon when numbers diminish. Still, it was worthwhile to see.

Lokrum island (at left) is great for lunch – pheasants sidle up and there are gardens and another fortress to visit.

Boats of all kinds, sizes and shapes are drawn to Croatia's harbors

Croatia ferry   To get to coastal islands, you either walk onto a ferry or catamaran or drive your car onto a ferry, as we did from Split to spend several days on the island of Vis.

Some ways people spend the 2.5 hours en route from Split to Vis island.

A wedding was taking place in Saint Mark's church in Zagreb.

Zagreb's cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary seems like it is always under repair. An earthquake in 1880 caused the most damage. Not sure the reason for this scafolding.
