Now in the French part of basque country, we couldn't resist staying in a medieval stopover like this. The 10 bookable rooms in the Chateau d'Urtubie are the real thing, i.e., dating from its 14th-century origins and 16th and 18th-century additions but with modern amenities like bathrooms, air condtioning and wifi. At left is the orangerie, sort of an outdoor party house common to many chateaux.
