This area between Spain and France has its own language (Euskara), flag and in Spain, autonomy (France won't allow this). This drive for autonomy has caused a lot of harsh treatment over the centuries, notably from Franco in the '30s. Periods of violent history aside, it has the best of two possible worlds as far as I'm concerned – the Atlantic coastline and Pyrenées mountains. It's impossible to say which is preferred – peaks or waves. The good thing is, basque country has both! |
